Remember all the guts and glory that was Celebrity Deathmatch on MTV in the ’90s?

All of that mayhem is being rebooted. The gruesome stop-action series got a green light for an all new season starring Ice Cube who will also executive produce.

“Happy to once again be working with Viacom and MTV on a fan favorite like ‘Celebrity Deathmatch’ and to continue our success together,” said Ice Cube.

The original series creator Eric Fogel will help executive produce, with additional showrunners and talent to be named shortly.

The reboot will be a weekly series for an SVOD or premium broadcast partner in 2019. This is only the first step in creating merchandise, films and other unique items that celebrate the animated classic.

“We’re excited to grow our partnership with Ice Cube and Cube Vision to reimagine this fan favorite,” said Chris McCarthy, President of MTV and VH1. “’Deathmatch’ was the meme before memes, remains a hot topic on social media and will be a smart, funny way to tackle the over-the-top rhetoric of today’s pop culture where it belongs – in the wrestling ring.”

Celebrity Deathmatch premiered on MTV in 1998 and ran until 2002 with two additional seasons on their sister station in 2006 and 2007.

Always bloody and full of carnage the series pitted pop icons against each other in a bloody battle to the death. From Dolly Parton vs. Jennifer Lopez to Backstreet Boys vs. Beastie Boys, the show pushed the pop culture envelope.

Three years ago MTV2 announced they would resurrect the show, only to abruptly cancel production without reason.

No word yet on when the series will air, but creators are saying to look out for it in 2019.
