The Walking Dead cast and crew are in mourning after the loss of one of their own. John Bernecker, an actor and stuntman with over 90 film and television credits to his name, passed away after a tragic accident on the set of the show during the filming of Season 8.
Coweta County Coroner Richard Hawk confirms he died on Wednesday
Bernecker was rushed to the hospital on Wednesday. The stuntman fell more than 20 feet onto a concrete floor, sustaining a serious head injury. He was taken by medivac to Atlanta Medical Center for treatment in the intensive care unit.
Bernecker was a highly accomplished stunt performer, working on projects such as Black Panther, Logan, and The Fate of the Furious.
AMC has temporarily halted production of The Walking Dead season 8 following the tragedy. From a statement released by Deadline prior to Bernecker’s death:
“We are saddened to report that John Bernecker, a talented stuntman for The Walking Dead and numerous other television shows and films, suffered serious injuries from a tragic accident on set,” AMC’s statement said. “He was immediately transported to an Atlanta hospital, and we have temporarily shut down production. We are keeping John and his family in our thoughts and prayers.”
According to Deadline on Thursday, Bernecker was unable to recover from his injuries and was declared brain dead. Their sources say Bernecker and an actor were “rehearsing a fight scene that was supposed to end with a routine fall from a balcony, but he lost his footing”.
In other tragic news, Fear the Walking Dead also recently lost Randy Schell, a voice artist, during a skydiving incident earlier this month. Our hearts go out to the entire Walking Dead family during this difficult time.
