Netflix’s smash hit new series Stranger Things has a whole lot more going for it than the fact that it reminds us of many things we love from the past, but the nostalgia-inducing references are without question one of the most fun things about the show. Some of the influences are obvious, like Stephen King’s IT and Spielberg’s ET, but others you might have missed.

Doing all the hard work for us, eagle-eyed fan Ulysse Thevenon just cut together a nearly five-minute long video essay that documents all of the Stranger Things visual references that he spotted, and best of all, he put the clips side-by-side with the original scenes that inspired them. As it turns out, the show pays direct visual homage to classic fan faves like The Shining, Alien, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Carrie.

This is really awesome. Enjoy!

A love letter to the supernatural classics of the ’80s, Stranger Things is the story of a young boy who vanishes into thin air. As friends, family and local police search for answers, they are drawn into an extraordinary mystery involving top-secret government experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and one very strange little girl.
