One of the most beloved horror films to come out of the 1990s is easily Candyman, directed by Bernard Rose, and based on Clive Barker’s story The Forbidden. Tony Todd starred as the titular boogeyman, an urban legend who survives only as long as his congregation believes.
While Todd has played many memorable roles over the course of his long career, Candyman will always be his signature in the eyes of many, and Todd has made his affection for the character clear on multiple occasions. He’d even like to play the role again, if allowed to.
That particular ship has probably sailed, but that doesn’t mean Todd’s Candyman performances won’t forever be treasured by fans, especially the 1992 original. Unfortunately, said original is sadly unavailable on Blu-Ray, at least in the United States.
Thankfully, that injustice looks to be rectified soon, according to a tweet by Todd himself. “Wait for the new 4k restoration of #Candyman w off screen commentary w @BernardJMRose coming soon” said Todd, in response to a fan of the film.
While the restoration Tony Todd refers to might be initially intended to screen in theaters, it’s hard to imagine that it wouldn’t hit Blu-Ray afterward. It remains a bit of a mystery why rights holder Sony hasn’t released it on BD prior to this, considering Candyman’s popularity.
