‘ROGUE ONE’ Is The Most STAR WARS Film Yet

Published

on

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, there was ‘Star Wars: A New Hope.’ The George Lucas directed fangasm has echoed throughout the years. So far we have had the original holy trinity of a trilogy, an okay prequel trilogy, animated series and tons of books. With ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ the franchise passed from Lucas to a new generation. ‘Rogue One’ Continues to show fans that Star Wars can survive and thrive outside of its father, Lucas.

‘Rogue One’ takes place right before ‘A New Hope.’ It tells the story of a rag-tag group of Rebels who discover that the Empire has built a planet killer known as the “Death Star.” In order to find a weakness within the murderous behemoth, the group has to go to the ends of the galaxy in order to find the data that will allow the Death Star to be destroyed, due to a flaw in its engineering. Sure, we all know that this will lead to the plans that lead Luke to destroying the Death Star. You know, that they end up with the plans, kinda like you knew that the Titanic would sink at the end of Titanic. The glory of this one doesn’t lay in where it ends up, but in the characters and the journey.

Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) becomes snared in the Rebels plans to find her father Galen Erso. Galen was a high ranking engineer for the empire at one point and the rebels have been trying to seek out his location. Jyn is paired up with Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and his droid K-2SO (voiced by Alan Tudyk). Along the way they pick up a blind swordsman, a gunslinger and a pilot for the Empire. As a group self-titled “Rogue One,” they battle their way to completing their mission.

The Empire is a formidable force with Orson Krennic, (Ben Mendelsohn) Darth Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin controlling the newly constructed Death Star. This is the Empire at the height of power. It is awesome to see the Empire at this level. The Rebels are still merely a splinter in their thumb. This entry gives a full scope of the Empires power and reach. The little time Darth Vader is in the film he too unleashes a power we haven’t seen Vader unleash before. In just a short time he reminds you that he is a horrifying force. I feel bad for the Rebels who are in his vicinity.

Rogue One is fan service to the service of fans. It reminds you that it is part of the Star Wars you grew up with. From pitchers of blue milk to classic characters and everything in between the fans have enough easter eggs and fangasm moments to talk about and analyze for a long time. The film doesn’t rely on ‘member berries’ as much as The Force Awakens, however. It sets its own course and introduces characters that are automatic favorites. The reprogrammed security droid, K-2SO in particular is my favorite. His blunt truth and realist outlook is a perfect comic-relief.

For me, my new order of Star Wars movies, goes: ‘Empire Strikes Back,’ ‘A New Hope’ and ‘Rogue One.’ Yea, it’s that good. This is the most Star Wars movie that has been made. It picks from all mediums of canon and creates something that is unmistakably Star Wars and unmistakably for the fans.

Trailer for ‘The Exorcism’ Has Russell Crowe Possessed

Published

on

The latest exorcism movie is about to drop this summer. It’s aptly titled The Exorcism and it stars Academy Award winner turned B-movie savant Russell Crowe. The trailer dropped today and by the looks of it, we are getting a possession movie that takes place on a movie set.

Just like this year’s recent demon-in-media-space film Late Night With the Devil, The Exorcism happens during a production. Although the former takes place on a live network talk show, the latter is on an active sound stage. Hopefully, it won’t be entirely serious and we’ll get some meta chuckles out of it.

The film will open in theaters on June 7, but since Shudder also acquired it, it probably won’t be long after that until it finds a home on the streaming service.

Crowe plays, “Anthony Miller, a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film. His estranged daughter, Lee (Ryan Simpkins), wonders if he’s slipping back into his past addictions or if there’s something more sinister at play. The film also stars Sam Worthington, Chloe Bailey, Adam Goldberg and David Hyde Pierce.”

Crowe did see some success in last year’s The Pope’s Exorcist mostly because his character was so over-the-top and infused with such comical hubris it bordered on parody. We will see if that is the route actor-turned-director Joshua John Miller takes with The Exorcism.

28 years later

Danny Boyle is revisiting his 28 Days Later universe with three new films. He will direct the first, 28 Years Later, with two more to follow. Deadline is reporting that sources say Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes have been cast for the first entry, a sequel to the original. Details are being kept under wraps so we don’t know how or if the first original sequel 28 Weeks Later fits into the project.

Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes

Boyle will direct the first movie but it’s unclear which role he will take on in the subsequent films. What is known is Candyman (2021) director Nia DaCosta is scheduled to direct the second film in this trilogy and that the third will be filmed immediately afterward. Whether DaCosta will direct both is still unclear.

Alex Garland is writing the scripts. Garland is having a successful time at the box office right now. He wrote and directed the current action/thriller Civil War which was just knocked out of the theatrical top spot by Radio Silence’s Abigail.

There is no word yet on when, or where, 28 Years Later will start production.

The original film followed Jim (Cillian Murphy) who wakes from a coma to find that London is currently dealing with a zombie outbreak.
