Producer James Wan Talks New Mortal Kombat Movie

Published

on

If there’s one fighting game franchise horror fans cherish above all others, it has to be Mortal Kombat. The series’ dark landscape, merciless characters, and gory fatalities lend themselves well to the sensibilities of most genre devotees. MK has even taken that connection further in recent years, by adding classic horror monsters like Freddy, Jason, and Predator to its line-up of guest fighters.

That said, with a new Mortal Kombat movie in development, it seems very appropriate that the man tasked with producing the project is none other than modern horror master James Wan (Insidious, The Conjuring). While the film is still in the early stages, Wan was recently asked for an update about its progress during an interview with IGN, and offered the following comments.

“It’s still cooking away. With that particular project, that’s a really cool property that I loved growing up as a kid. Besides the game, even the movies as well, I kind of enjoyed them for what they are.The key here is to try and do it right. I don’t want to rush into it. So right now, we’re just trying to take our time to make sure it’s heading in the right direction. I think that’s more important than trying to rush through it and pump up something that no one likes.”

As for what led the currently very busy Wan to want to produce a new theatrical take on MK, Wan said this:

“I love the characters. I think they’re such colorful characters. It’s such an amazing take on, basically, Enter the Dragon. It’s that fantasy version, the video game version, of Enter the Dragon. And in doing so, they ended up creating such interesting characters and I think that is such a cool world to explore. This really mythical, bigger world that lives on another dimension on top of ours. I think that’s really fun to play with and so we’ll see.”

While many who grew up in the 90’s still regard Paul W.S. Anderson’s first Mortal Kombat film as a fun and entertaining way to spend 100 minutes, few would seriously argue that there isn’t lots of room to improve on what fans received in back in 1995. With a powerhouse filmmaker like Wan overseeing things, it’s hard to imagine this new MK adaptation not managing to best what Anderson put together, at least in some ways.

Plus, the world really needs another good Mortal Kombat movie, if only to wash away the horrible taste of 1997 sequel Mortal Kombat: Annhilation. Packed with way too many characters for a single script to successfully support, full of groan-worthy one-liners, and populated with an almost entirely new cast, Annhilation was the disaster many worried the original would end up being. Note to James Wan: If you decide to do an animality in the new film, *please* spend more than five bucks on the CGI used to create it.

The Motion Picture Association (MPA) has given this film an “R” rating for its “bloody images,” hinting at the visceral and intense experience awaiting viewers. The film draws inspiration from acclaimed horror benchmarks like “A Quiet Place,” weaving a post-apocalyptic tale of a father and his two sons navigating a desolate world. Following a catastrophic event that depopulates the planet, the family faces the dual challenge of surviving their dystopian environment and eluding mysterious nocturnal creatures.

Joining Nicolas Cage in this harrowing journey are Jaeden Martell, known for his role in “IT” (2017), Maxwell Jenkins from “Lost in Space,” and Sadie Soverall, featured in “Fate: The Winx Saga.” Directed by Ben Brewer (“The Trust”) and penned by Mike Nilon (“Braven”), “Arcadian” promises a unique blend of poignant storytelling and electrifying survival horror.

Winnie the Pooh 3

Wow, they’re churning things out fast! The upcoming sequel “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 3” is officially moving forward, promising an expanded narrative with a larger budget and the introduction of beloved characters from A.A. Milne’s original tales. As confirmed by Variety, the third installment in the horror franchise will welcome Rabbit, the heffalumps, and the woozles into its dark and twisted narrative.

This sequel is a part of an ambitious cinematic universe that reimagines children’s stories as horror tales. Alongside “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” and its first sequel, the universe includes films such as “Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare”, “Bambi: The Reckoning,” and “Pinocchio Unstrung”. These movies are set to converge in the crossover event “Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble,” slated for a 2025 release.

The creation of these films was made possible when A.A. Milne’s 1926 children’s book “Winnie-the-Pooh” entered the public domain last year, allowing filmmakers to explore these cherished characters in unprecedented ways. Director Rhys Frake-Waterfield and producer Scott Jeffrey Chambers, of Jagged Edge Productions, have led the charge in this innovative endeavor.

The inclusion of Rabbit, heffalumps, and woozles in the upcoming sequel introduces a new layer to the franchise. In Milne’s original stories, heffalumps are imagined creatures resembling elephants, while woozles are known for their weasel-like characteristics and a penchant for stealing honey. Their roles in the narrative remain to be seen, but their addition promises to enrich the horror universe with deeper connections to the source material.
