As awesome as last year’s theatrical IT adaptation was, director Tommy Lee Wallace’s 1990 miniseries adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel will always hold a special place in my heart, mostly thanks to the efforts of original Pennywise actor Tim Curry.
Still, while the miniseries clearly has its flaws when looked back at from outside the lens of nostalgia, it possesses other strengths outside of just Curry’s performance. For one, the cast of child losers is pretty great, and left a solid foundation for the 2017 cast to step into.
The miniseries’ story itself is also a lot closer to the book than the 2017 movie in many ways, the most notable difference being that the miniseries was set in the same 1950s/1960s setting as the novel, a point in its favor from King purists.
As beloved as the 1990 IT miniseries tends to be though, it’s creation has never been explored in-depth. The DVD and Blu-Ray contains only a commentary track, and that’s it. Thankfully, that’s all about to change with the new documentary Pennywise: The Story of IT.
Pennywise: The Story of IT comes from Dead Mouse Productions, the folks behind prior horror documentaries on Hellraiser and Fright Night. John Campopiano (Unearthed and Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary) directs.
Featuring interviews with more than 50 members of IT’s cast and crew – and lots of newly released behind-the-scenes photos and footage – Pennywise: The Story of IT hits Blu-Ray in June. Check out the teaser trailer below, and brace yourself for the coolness to come.
