While last year’s theatrical IT adaptation was a huge hit at the box office, none of that was due to its cast. The film was entirely sold on the idea that it was new take on one of Stephen King’s most beloved novels of all-time.
Of the child Losers, only Finn Wolfhard was a known commodity, having played Mike Wheeler on Stranger Things. Even Pennywise actor Bill Skarsgard was unknown to most before landing the coveted role of King’s evil clown.
When IT: Chapter 2 first began casting it looked director Andy Muschietti was taking the opposite path for the adult Losers’ Club, enlisting Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain as Bev, X-Men star James McAvoy as Bill, and SNL veteran Bill Hader as Richie.
That hasn’t entirely held true though, with the subsequent castings of adult Ben, Eddie, and Stan trending much more toward lesser-known names. Now, Variety reports that the older Losers’ Club is complete, with the addition of Isaiah Mustafa as Mike.
Despite working pretty regularly, Isaiah Mustafa is still probably best known as the “Old Spice Guy” in that brand’s shower-based commercials in the early part of this decade. A prominent role in IT: Chapter 2 could end up vaulting his acting career to new heights.
While this certainly feels like an out of the box casting, Mustafa was an actor when he landed the Old Spice gig, and there’s no reason to believe Muschietti and Warner Bros. would cast him if he didn’t prove his dramatic chops during the audition process.
