“Intersections: Six Tales of Ouija Horror” is Perfect Reading for Friday the 13th

Published

on

Just in time for Friday the 13th, Howling Unicorn Press offers their very first collaborative horror anthology.  Intersections: Six Tales of Ouija Horror is a rarity in horror fiction anthologies, a volume of six novella-length stories without a single weak link among them.

Authors Rob E. Boley and Megan Hart gave their fellows just one little rule when they showed interest in the anthology:  Your story has to include a Oujia board as one element.  It doesn’t have to be the center of the story, but it has to be involved.  The authors rallied to the cause alongside Boley and Hart to produce six amazing horror tales, not a single one stereotypical.  In other words, there are no stories here where someone plays with a Ouija board only to have a demon emerge to terrorize them.  No, instead, the authors decided to explore a world of horrors I’ve never seen connected with the infamous Ouija before.

In Kerry Lipp’s “Ghosted”, the author explores the dangers of modern dating and obsession when a young woman named Keisha uses the ashes of her former lover and a Ouija board to attempt to find the perfect man.  Trouble comes when she brushes aside an unstable man in the process, and he seeks his own lethal revenge in his attempts to get her back.

Megan Hart’s “Blood Born” is a brutal examination the lengths a woman will go to save her child from harm.  Young mother, Tori, finds herself trapped in a snowy wasteland with a family led by a matriarch who never leaves her Ouija board.  As the older woman’s plans become clearer, Tori must decide whether she can face her own darkness to save her child form harm.

In “Gallow’s Grove”, Brad C. Hodson takes us back to the glory days of the spiritualist movement of the 1920s.  Persephone Gale spends her days exposing hoaxes and charlatans making a buck off the grief of others, but when she travels to Gallow’s Grove, a town populated by mediums, fortune tellers, etc., she must face parts of her past she’d long since buried.

Chris Marrs imagines a world decimated in a battle between angels and demons in “Sounds in Silence”.  The dead have no place to move onto, but Lily and a powerful spirit board may just hold the key to ending their war.

Sephera Giron gives us a woman searching for more in “The Next Big Thing”, but poor Felicity doesn’t know where to stop.  Each step leads her to another and another until she steals a Ouija board from a powerful medium and finds herself stalked by the spirits the board has trapped inside itself.

And finally, Rob E. Boley presents two women connected in death in a deadly race to save not only themselves but every soul that passes from this world and into the beyond.  It’s dark versus light, love versus hate, and it drips with Boley’s dark humor from start to finish.  “Mr. Shady” is a hell of a tale.

This is an anthology for readers who love the weird and original.  The stories are placed so that the mood and tone of each complements and contrasts in just the right ways to keep you turning pages.  If this is the type of writing we can expect from the collaboration at Howling Unicorn Press, it’s safe to say we can expect great things, even if Hart and Boley insist they aren’t trying to start a publishing firm.

Trailer for ‘The Exorcism’ Has Russell Crowe Possessed

Published

on

The latest exorcism movie is about to drop this summer. It’s aptly titled The Exorcism and it stars Academy Award winner turned B-movie savant Russell Crowe. The trailer dropped today and by the looks of it, we are getting a possession movie that takes place on a movie set.

Just like this year’s recent demon-in-media-space film Late Night With the Devil, The Exorcism happens during a production. Although the former takes place on a live network talk show, the latter is on an active sound stage. Hopefully, it won’t be entirely serious and we’ll get some meta chuckles out of it.

The film will open in theaters on June 7, but since Shudder also acquired it, it probably won’t be long after that until it finds a home on the streaming service.

Crowe plays, “Anthony Miller, a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film. His estranged daughter, Lee (Ryan Simpkins), wonders if he’s slipping back into his past addictions or if there’s something more sinister at play. The film also stars Sam Worthington, Chloe Bailey, Adam Goldberg and David Hyde Pierce.”

Crowe did see some success in last year’s The Pope’s Exorcist mostly because his character was so over-the-top and infused with such comical hubris it bordered on parody. We will see if that is the route actor-turned-director Joshua John Miller takes with The Exorcism.

28 years later

Danny Boyle is revisiting his 28 Days Later universe with three new films. He will direct the first, 28 Years Later, with two more to follow. Deadline is reporting that sources say Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes have been cast for the first entry, a sequel to the original. Details are being kept under wraps so we don’t know how or if the first original sequel 28 Weeks Later fits into the project.

Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes

Boyle will direct the first movie but it’s unclear which role he will take on in the subsequent films. What is known is Candyman (2021) director Nia DaCosta is scheduled to direct the second film in this trilogy and that the third will be filmed immediately afterward. Whether DaCosta will direct both is still unclear.

Alex Garland is writing the scripts. Garland is having a successful time at the box office right now. He wrote and directed the current action/thriller Civil War which was just knocked out of the theatrical top spot by Radio Silence’s Abigail.

There is no word yet on when, or where, 28 Years Later will start production.

The original film followed Jim (Cillian Murphy) who wakes from a coma to find that London is currently dealing with a zombie outbreak.
