Top 12 Highest Grossing Horror Movies of All Time

Published

on

The Box Office charts are not always a sign of quality, but they still have to say something about the movie. It must have at least some appeal to wider audiences, getting people to watch these movies. I’ve checked for the Top 12 highest grossing Box Office movies of all time, by domestic box office.

#12 – The Conjuring (2013)

One of the highest grossing horror movies at the box office

It was branded one of the scariest movies of all time, scaring people all over the world. The Conjuring, directed by James Wan, follows Ed and Lorraine Warren, two paranormal investigators helping a haunted family. It brought the haunted house movies back to the big screen and made $137,400,141!

#11 – Split (2016)

One of the highest grossing horror movies at the box office

Even though it’s new it is not the newest movie on this list. Also it is not the only M. Night. Shyamalan movie on this list. Split is about Kevin, played by James McAvoy, who has 23 different personalities. He kidnaps three girls to feed his new, 24th personality that will emerge soon. It was the comeback for Shyamalan and made him a stunning $138,136,855.

#10 – The Blair Witch Project (1999)

One of the highest grossing horror movies at the box office

The movie that gave birth to the found footage craze that’s still going on today and for a long time the most profitable movie of all time. In The Blair Witch Project, three film students take a trip to the woods to document their search for the titular Blair Witch. They might have gone lost, but their found tapes earned them $140,539,099.

#9 – Gremlins (1984)

One of the highest grossing horror movies at the box office

The only horror comedy in the Top 12. With great practical effects, Joe Dante brought the Gremlins to life. These little monsters tear a whole small town apart… And we get to watch it. The most fun you’ll ever have seeing people killed by fluffy small pets. It really deserved the $153,083,102 it made.

#8 – Get Out (2017)

One of the highest grossing horror movies at the box office

Get Out is still in some theaters, to it might even climb up the list. Jordan Peele directed this Horror movie about a young African-American who’s visiting his Caucasian girlfriends family for the first time. And things go wrong. So far Jordan Peeles directorial debut made $173,013,555, but who knows where it will end.

#7 – World War Z (2013)

One of the highest grossing horror movies at the box office

More action than horror, this is the Blockbuster adaptation of Max Brooks critically acclaimed novel of the same name. Brad Pitt plays Gerry Lane, an ex-UN employee who tries his best to get back to his family when the Zombie apocalypse starts. It’s the highest grossing Zombie movie of all time, making $202,359,711 in the box office.

#6 – Signs (2002)

One of the highest grossing horror movies at the box-office

The second Shyamalan on this list, but not the last. Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix are a normal family living on a farm, when crop circles, Signs, appear. Will Aliens attack? I’m not sure, but I am sure that this confirmed Shyamalan as a household name in horror, earning him $227,966,634.

#5 – The Exorcist (1973)

One of the highest grossing horror movies at the box office

The oldest movie on this list. And arguably the best. The Exorcist by WIlliam Friedkin shocked people then and still shocks people with the possession and following exorcism of sweet teenage girl Regan. While we’re never sure if the Demon is gone, we can surely say that it made $232,906,145.

#4 – War of the Worlds (2005)

One of the highest grossing horror movies at the box office

Of course, when it comes to big blockbuster movies we have to see Steven Spielberg on the list. When earth is invaded by aliens, only Tom Cruise and his family can stop the invasion. While more action than horror, it sure has enough horrific elements to count and it’s on rank 4 because it earned $234,280,354 in the box office.

#3 – I am Legend (2007)

One of the highest grossing horror movies at the box office

Fourth time’s the charme. The story of Robert Neville (played by Will Smith), who is the last man alive in a world full of vampire-like beings, was adapted 3 times before. But only one of them made it into the Top 12, by grossing $256,393,010.

#2 – Jaws (1975)

One of the highest grossing horror movies at the box office

The mother of all Blockbusters, the original Blockbuster. Jaws is about this great white shark attacking the waters of Amity Island. Only Brody, Quint and Hooper can safe the town by killing this shark. For some time it was the highest grossing movie of all time. And to this day it’s the second highest grossing horror movie of all time, making $260,000,000.

#1 – The Sixth Sense (1999)

One of the highest grossing horror movies at the box office

Here we are, the highest grossing movie of all time. Shyamalan seems to be the king of the horror-box-office. In The Sixth Sense he scares, shocks and surprises people, all in the span of under two hours. Bruce Willis, playing a child psychologist named Dr. Malcolm Crowe, tries to help out a boy who can see dead people. I can’t tell you if he can really see them, but I can tell you this movie made $293,506,292.

Trailer for ‘The Exorcism’ Has Russell Crowe Possessed

Published

on

The latest exorcism movie is about to drop this summer. It’s aptly titled The Exorcism and it stars Academy Award winner turned B-movie savant Russell Crowe. The trailer dropped today and by the looks of it, we are getting a possession movie that takes place on a movie set.

Just like this year’s recent demon-in-media-space film Late Night With the Devil, The Exorcism happens during a production. Although the former takes place on a live network talk show, the latter is on an active sound stage. Hopefully, it won’t be entirely serious and we’ll get some meta chuckles out of it.

The film will open in theaters on June 7, but since Shudder also acquired it, it probably won’t be long after that until it finds a home on the streaming service.

Crowe plays, “Anthony Miller, a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film. His estranged daughter, Lee (Ryan Simpkins), wonders if he’s slipping back into his past addictions or if there’s something more sinister at play. The film also stars Sam Worthington, Chloe Bailey, Adam Goldberg and David Hyde Pierce.”

Crowe did see some success in last year’s The Pope’s Exorcist mostly because his character was so over-the-top and infused with such comical hubris it bordered on parody. We will see if that is the route actor-turned-director Joshua John Miller takes with The Exorcism.

Published

28 years later

Danny Boyle is revisiting his 28 Days Later universe with three new films. He will direct the first, 28 Years Later, with two more to follow. Deadline is reporting that sources say Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes have been cast for the first entry, a sequel to the original. Details are being kept under wraps so we don’t know how or if the first original sequel 28 Weeks Later fits into the project.

Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes

Boyle will direct the first movie but it’s unclear which role he will take on in the subsequent films. What is known is Candyman (2021) director Nia DaCosta is scheduled to direct the second film in this trilogy and that the third will be filmed immediately afterward. Whether DaCosta will direct both is still unclear.

Alex Garland is writing the scripts. Garland is having a successful time at the box office right now. He wrote and directed the current action/thriller Civil War which was just knocked out of the theatrical top spot by Radio Silence’s Abigail.

There is no word yet on when, or where, 28 Years Later will start production.

28 Days Later

The original film followed Jim (Cillian Murphy) who wakes from a coma to find that London is currently dealing with a zombie outbreak.
