HAPPY FRIDAY THE 13TH EVERYBODY! This is a special one not only because its a Friday the 13th that falls in October, but also because Sacred Bones Records released a cover of John Carpenter’s legendary theme to Halloween performed by none other than Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross! The release is to celebrate Carpenter’s upcoming album Anthology (Movie Themes 1974-1998) releasing on October 20th and the current Anthology Tour. Listen to the YouTube upload below:
Reznor and Ross have been killing it with their scores, most notably their work with David Fincher on The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl. Their version of the classic theme takes roughly a minute to kick in, but once it kicks in it fucking kicks in. The score is haunting and heart racing in as ever as those iconic notes are slowly played. In the background, R&R’s industrial keeps building until the two minute mark when the original theme comes in to blow your tits off. This has to be the best cover of the Halloween theme I have heard over the years (and clocking in at 7:48 the longest).
Honestly, I would be more than happy if R&R teamed up with Carpenter to do the score for the new Halloween movie if it continues to provide awesomeness such as this. Carpenter’s synth mixed with their industrial sound and beats would make for a truly killer score. But even if that never happens, we can still enjoy this nearly 8 minute cover. If you are in the mood for more awesomeness don’t forget to check out the music video for Carpenter’s theme for Christine or check out Reznor’s cover of Immigrant Song with Karen O from Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
