Fantastic Vintage Costumes of Halloween Past

Published

on

One of the absolute best parts of Halloween is dressing in a costume.  No matter what age you are, there is something that’s just fun about picking a Halloween costume.  You get to go out into the world as your chosen character, and experience all Halloween has to offer dressed up like Dr. Zoidberg from Futurama or sexy Freddy Kruger (despite the obvious, and weird problems raised with that costume).  Seeing what your friends or co-workers have come up with can be especially fascinating as you get a bit of a glimpse into where their fan flag flies: “Oh wow Jim, I never knew you were that into Twilight…”

However, we do have to acknowledge the fact that, at some point, we have lost our way when it comes to Halloween costumes.  Perhaps it was when we stopped putting the time in to making most of our costumes and just buying pre-made kits from shops.

Lets take a look at some amazing, and in some cases really unsettling, vintage costumes from the first half of the 20th century:

That kid in the front is much much creepier than anything you will see on Halloween this year.  Plus, that is an awesome scarecrow mask (in the back) that would not only be easy to make, but would stand out at any costume party today.

These “little Hallowe’en people” are essentially only wearing layers (which, if you are anywhere in the north, you know all about when it comes to costumes) and plain, expressionless masks.  There is no better mask to elicit shivers than one that bears no expression or distinguishing mark, and is a mask meant to hide your face, rather than change it. It should be a goal for each and every one of us to have a child (be they your children, your nephews, your cousins) look this unsettling on Halloween.  Or, even better, get a flock of children to do it:

Children are much creepier in flocks, but it can work for adults too:

First thing is first: these are clearly not the scariest vintage costumes, but that aside, there is something just so perfect about a group of people going together with what is essentially the same idea, and instead of it being awkward (“what do you mean there is another Crow here?  No one ever goes as the Crow!”), when a group goes with a simple costume, it becomes quite impressive, a bit unsettling, and just plain awesome (aside from having to breath in these bags):

Bagchildren

No list would be complete without a few vintage costumes of creepy clowns:

clowncrow

Perhaps the perfect blend of everyone’s Crow costume, a droog from A Clockwork Orange, and a clown you would not want to meet…anywhere…whereas the more  common clown costume of the early part of the 20th century harkens back to a more traditional “Punch and Judy” appearance:

These classic clowns are not quite as creepy as say, Pennywise, but rest assured, you can definitely make them creepy:

Then there are those vintage costumes which just defy categorization:

tirepeople

Terrifying early Michelin Men? Aliens?

duckcostumes

It feels safe to assume that you are making the same expression at these…um…duck costumes (?) as the young man standing in the back.  I am assuming this is some kind of vocal group, as it would explain the duck conductor…

Still creepy though.

weirdestcostumeever

Yep. This costume existed.

There you have it, a brief look at some of the fantastic vintage costumes that have all but disappeared today.  Perhaps if you are still wondering what to do for your own costume this year, you could take inspiration from some of these vintage ideas and go simple, handmade and completely unique to you.

Or just get a skeleton kit and hope that Bill does not wear one too.

Happy Halloween!

The Motion Picture Association (MPA) has given this film an “R” rating for its “bloody images,” hinting at the visceral and intense experience awaiting viewers. The film draws inspiration from acclaimed horror benchmarks like “A Quiet Place,” weaving a post-apocalyptic tale of a father and his two sons navigating a desolate world. Following a catastrophic event that depopulates the planet, the family faces the dual challenge of surviving their dystopian environment and eluding mysterious nocturnal creatures.

Joining Nicolas Cage in this harrowing journey are Jaeden Martell, known for his role in “IT” (2017), Maxwell Jenkins from “Lost in Space,” and Sadie Soverall, featured in “Fate: The Winx Saga.” Directed by Ben Brewer (“The Trust”) and penned by Mike Nilon (“Braven”), “Arcadian” promises a unique blend of poignant storytelling and electrifying survival horror.

‘Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 3’ Is a Go with Enhanced Budget and New Characters

Winnie the Pooh 3

Wow, they’re churning things out fast! The upcoming sequel “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 3” is officially moving forward, promising an expanded narrative with a larger budget and the introduction of beloved characters from A.A. Milne’s original tales. As confirmed by Variety, the third installment in the horror franchise will welcome Rabbit, the heffalumps, and the woozles into its dark and twisted narrative.

This sequel is a part of an ambitious cinematic universe that reimagines children’s stories as horror tales. Alongside “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” and its first sequel, the universe includes films such as “Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare”, “Bambi: The Reckoning,” and “Pinocchio Unstrung”. These movies are set to converge in the crossover event “Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble,” slated for a 2025 release.

The creation of these films was made possible when A.A. Milne’s 1926 children’s book “Winnie-the-Pooh” entered the public domain last year, allowing filmmakers to explore these cherished characters in unprecedented ways. Director Rhys Frake-Waterfield and producer Scott Jeffrey Chambers, of Jagged Edge Productions, have led the charge in this innovative endeavor.

The inclusion of Rabbit, heffalumps, and woozles in the upcoming sequel introduces a new layer to the franchise. In Milne’s original stories, heffalumps are imagined creatures resembling elephants, while woozles are known for their weasel-like characteristics and a penchant for stealing honey. Their roles in the narrative remain to be seen, but their addition promises to enrich the horror universe with deeper connections to the source material.
