Exorcist Series Creator Wants to Recreate Famous Exorcist III Jump Scare in Season 2

News is coming forth at full speed this morning like a surgical shears-wielding headless nun on the highly anticipated second season of The Exorcist series that is set to return this September at its home on FOX. Along with some major plot details on what to expect from Father Tomas, Father Marcus, and the rest of the demon-fighting warriors of the Catholic Church, series creator Jeremy Slater recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about what season two will bring to audiences this Fall.

Per the THR report:

Season two will resume with a six-month time jump that finds the dynamic between Marcus and Tomas significantly changed. Gone is the teacher-student relationship from season one. With Marcus stripped of his collar and Tomas having visions, the priest partnership will face new obstacles in season two as they touch down in Seattle to save a foster family in need. New to season two is John Cho (Star Trek), who plays Andrew Kim, a foster father of four. Brianna Hildebrand (Deadpool) also joins the cast as Charity, the eldest of the children in Andrew’s care.

However, a little snippet in this sit-down interview that really caught my attention is Slater’s mention of wanting the second season to channel such classic horror films such as Poltergeist, The Shining, and perhaps most importantly, The Exorcist III. In the interview, Slater made a point to say the series will give a heavy nod to the visually beautiful third film in the original Exorcist trilogy by mentioning that the upcoming season will somehow recreate one of, if not THE scariest moment in the film.

Yeah. That one folks. Shudders.

Slater to THR:

“I said if we came back for season two, I wanted some Poltergeist in there. I want The Shining in there. I want some of the things that really scared me as an impressionable kid. We try to do some brand new types of horror and stretch our wings from season one.”

“There’s a moment from The Exorcist III that every horror fan knows and loves. We’re looking into how we can get that moment in our show this year. It involves a hospital. It’s the single best jump scare in horror movie history aside from Ben Gardner’s (Craig Kingsbury) head coming out of the boat in Jaws. Also, I love the idea of a demonic serial killer. We’re not exactly doing the Gemini Killer (Brad Dourif) this year with the new demon. But, I think you are going to see that this demon has a pattern and a methodology. It’s a boogeyman throughout history that has claimed a lot of notches on its belt. It’s nowhere closer to being finished.”

As for the Rance clan who suffered at the hands of Pazuzu in season one, we had initially reported that Geena Davis and company may or may not make an appearance in season two. Slater confirms per this morning’s interview that at least ONE member of the family will make a cameo appearance this Fall on FOX. We’ll just have to wait and see exactly who.

The Exorcist season two stars Alfonso Herrera, Ben Daniels, Kurt Egyiawan, John Cho, Christopher Cousins, Cyrus Arnold, Brianna Hildebrand, and Zuleikha Robinson.

Season Two of The Exorcist premieres Friday, Sept. 29 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

Trailer for ‘The Exorcism’ Has Russell Crowe Possessed

Published

on

The latest exorcism movie is about to drop this summer. It’s aptly titled The Exorcism and it stars Academy Award winner turned B-movie savant Russell Crowe. The trailer dropped today and by the looks of it, we are getting a possession movie that takes place on a movie set.

Just like this year’s recent demon-in-media-space film Late Night With the Devil, The Exorcism happens during a production. Although the former takes place on a live network talk show, the latter is on an active sound stage. Hopefully, it won’t be entirely serious and we’ll get some meta chuckles out of it.

The film will open in theaters on June 7, but since Shudder also acquired it, it probably won’t be long after that until it finds a home on the streaming service.

Crowe plays, “Anthony Miller, a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film. His estranged daughter, Lee (Ryan Simpkins), wonders if he’s slipping back into his past addictions or if there’s something more sinister at play. The film also stars Sam Worthington, Chloe Bailey, Adam Goldberg and David Hyde Pierce.”

Crowe did see some success in last year’s The Pope’s Exorcist mostly because his character was so over-the-top and infused with such comical hubris it bordered on parody. We will see if that is the route actor-turned-director Joshua John Miller takes with The Exorcism.

28 years later

Danny Boyle is revisiting his 28 Days Later universe with three new films. He will direct the first, 28 Years Later, with two more to follow. Deadline is reporting that sources say Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes have been cast for the first entry, a sequel to the original. Details are being kept under wraps so we don’t know how or if the first original sequel 28 Weeks Later fits into the project.

Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes

Boyle will direct the first movie but it’s unclear which role he will take on in the subsequent films. What is known is Candyman (2021) director Nia DaCosta is scheduled to direct the second film in this trilogy and that the third will be filmed immediately afterward. Whether DaCosta will direct both is still unclear.

Alex Garland is writing the scripts. Garland is having a successful time at the box office right now. He wrote and directed the current action/thriller Civil War which was just knocked out of the theatrical top spot by Radio Silence’s Abigail.

There is no word yet on when, or where, 28 Years Later will start production.

The original film followed Jim (Cillian Murphy) who wakes from a coma to find that London is currently dealing with a zombie outbreak.
