Let’s just stop and think about Scorpion ripping Ken’s spine out from him, or Ryu hadoukening the shit out of Johnny Cage. Just think about how awesome that would be for just a second to have a Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter game. And on a serious note, is it possible that it could actually happen in the future?
The idea is indeed entertaining and certainly not anything new as this fantasy is about as old as the arcade games itself. Game lovers of both titles have made plenty of fan-made playable games, YouTube videos, and art posters dreaming about the ultimate fighting game crossover. Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon himself fancies the idea of bringing the two popular ass-kicking games together in the future via an interview with IGN Unflitered.
The NetherRealm Studios creative director stated via the interview that if If Capcom ever came to NetherRealm to discuss such a project, Boon said he would “have to entertain it,” and additionally inserted he and his team would have to (and rightfully so) do extensive research on the Street Fighter characters for such a project to be successful.
However, as Boon himself is giddy with an idea of a legit cross-over game, he inserts the realization statement declaring that “There’s part of me that’s like, That would be such a cool dream, and then there’s another part of me that goes, There’s no way would that satisfy everybody.” Given the contrasting tones of both franchises, Boon added, “there’s different pacing, there’s different fundamentals with both of them.”
There’s absolutely no denying the level of differences between the two fighting-style video game giants, and while Boon realizes this would be more unlikely to come to fruition, he certainly isn’t ruling it out. Check out the full interview from IGN below to hear his thoughts on it in its entirety.
