In the current horror-on-TV boom we’re experiencing, the two reigning kings are without question AMC’s The Walking Dead and FX’s American Horror Story. Just as both made their triumphant returns this past week, so too have future seasons of both already been ordered, as FX has just announced that the green light has been given to their most popular show’s fifth season.

The news come hot on the heels of last Wednesday night’s premiere episode of Freak Show, which shattered ratings records for the network. The telecast was the most-watched single program in FX’s 20+ year history, garnering 10 million total viewers. September 9th’s 7th Season premiere of Sons of Anarchy was the previous record-holder. Prior to that, American Horror Story: Coven held the title.

In a press release sent out today, FX cited the smash hit ratings success as being the reason why a fifth season has already been ordered up. 13 brand new episodes will head our way in October of next year, though there’s of course not yet any way of knowing what the theme of the fifth season will be.

Per the press release, Freak Show has 12 all-new episodes airing Wednesdays at 10 PM ET/PT through January. In this Wednesday night’s episode, “Massacres and Matinees”, a citywide curfew threatens to shut down the Freak Show. Dell Toledo (Michael Chiklis), a strongman from Ethel’s (Kathy Bates) troubled past, arrives at camp. Gloria (Frances Conroy) arranges a terrifying play date for Dandy (Finn Wittrock), and the Tattler Twins (Sarah Paulson) reveal a talent that could knock Elsa (Jessica Lange) from the spotlight.

Anyone want to take any guesses as to what the theme of Season 5 may be? Feel free to do so, in the comments section below!

  1. I think the next season will be space themed.

Freakshow is set in Jupiter, Florida.
Jessica plays a character called Elsa Mars.
Plus she sang Life On Mars :’)
